Celebrating International Paramedics Day 2024: "The Difference We Make"

8 July 2024

Recognising the vital role of paramedics in forensic healthcare settings

International Paramedics Day, held on 8th July 2024, offers an opportunity to build a deeper understanding of the essential work carried out by paramedics around the world. This annual celebration, launched in 2022, honours the anniversary of Dominique-Jean Larrey's birth, the man often referred to as the 'father of modern-day ambulance services.'

A Young Profession with a Growing Impact

Though relatively young, the paramedic profession is rapidly expanding, showcasing a wide range of roles across various fields, including forensic healthcare settings. From police custody suites to sexual assault referral centres, paramedics are making a significant impact by working with some of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised individuals in society.

Aims of International Paramedics Day

International Paramedics Day sets out to:

  • Celebrate paramedics and first responders globally: Recognising their vital role in our communities.
  • Acknowledge the difference paramedics make: Highlighting their contributions in every imaginable situation.
  • Raise awareness: Showcasing the diverse settings where paramedics work and the critical roles they play.
  • Promote the profession: Inspiring aspiring paramedics and students to join this noble profession.

Theme for 2024: "The Difference We Make"

This year’s theme, "The Difference We Make," focuses on the profound impact paramedics have every single day around the world. Paramedics in forensic healthcare settings embody this theme by providing high-quality healthcare in difficult circumstances, ensuring the rights of individuals are maintained and their needs are advocated for.

The Role of Paramedics in Forensic Healthcare

Paramedics working in police custody suites and sexual assault referral centres play a crucial role in making the unseen seen. They work tirelessly to deliver healthcare to marginalised and overlooked individuals. Their contributions include:

  • Delivering Immediate Care: Providing essential medical attention in high-pressure environments.
  • Advocating for Vulnerable Individuals: Ensuring that detainees' and survivors' health needs and rights are met.
  • Maintaining High Standards of Care: Upholding the dignity and welfare of individuals in challenging settings.
  • Supporting Legal and Medical Processes: Contributing to the accurate documentation and reporting necessary for legal proceedings.
