The programme follows the ASET (Advanced Standards for Education and Training) of the UK Association for Forensic Nurses and Paramedics, endorsed by the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFLM).


The one year programme and will run twice a year, with September and January intakes, the first aiming to be January (February) 2025.

Forensic Medical Examinations in Sexual Assault (FMESA)

The Saint Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre provides a comprehensive, tailored and fully accredited programme of training and education in the field of rape and sexual assault.


As the first SARC to be established in the country, St Mary’s has led the field in sharing good practice and seeking to raise standards of care for victims of rape and sexual assault.

Diploma course in Forensic Medical Sciences


The Course comprises over 50 two-hour sessions covering a broad range of subjects, delivered by recognised forensic specialists and starting in October and ending in April. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the Diploma in Forensic Medical Sciences, which is offered by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.

Expert Witness Certificate - England and Wales

This is the first university certificated expert witness programme in the UK. The programme is made up of 5 days of training, which can be attended over a period of 2 years. Experts who successfully complete the corresponding assessments are awarded this widely recognised certificate.

Expert Witness Certificate - Scotland

The certificate is made up of 4 days of training and 3 assessments. The assessments must all be completed within a 2 year period starting from the date when the expert receives their first assessment pass.

Licentiate FFLM (GFM)

The LFFLM (GFM) is a four-module exam. It consists of:

  • a Part 1 written exam, which has 150 best-of-five multiple-choice questions and is online;
  • a COVE (compendium of validated evidence);
  • a Portfolio;
  • and a Part 2 clinical exam (14 stations); most stations are online.

Licentiate FFLM (SOM)

The LFFLM (SOM) is a four-module exam. It consists of:

  • a Part 1 written exam, which has 150 best-of-five multiple-choice questions and is online;
  • a COVE (compendium of validated evidence);
  • a Portfolio;
  • and a Part 2 clinical exam (11 or 14 stations); most stations are online.
EXAM DETAILS

Diploma of Legal Medicine

The DLM is a stand-alone online exam, a one-paper format consisting of 150 best-of-five multiple-choice questions to be completed within three hours. Candidates are tested on a wide range of topics in Legal Medicine as set out in the published syllabus.
